Internal Family Systems (IFS)
Internal Family Systems, sometimes called Parts Work, explores the different parts of your own internal world. Have you ever wondered how and why you might experience multiple emotions all at once, especially when those emotions seem to contradict each other? Because of our unique upbringings, life experiences, trauma, and perspectives, our system develops its own internal family and this internal family includes many parts. These parts are just different expressions of yourself, such as a perfectionistic part, a mom part, a people pleaser part, an intellectualizing part, a humorous part, a problem solving part, a sister part, a planner part. There may be a part that needs a glass of wine to relax at the end of the day, an irritable part, a part that binges comfort shows or doom scrolls, an overthinker part, a part that withdraws or shuts down. Some parts are protective and work very hard to make sure we don’t get hurt. There are also parts that can feel very young and may present as an inner child that experienced trauma. There are no bad parts. They are there for a reason. IFS helps us connect with our core self so that we can build a reparative relationship with these parts and heal inner wounds.
